DPF problems are very common in many diesel engine cars, vans and HGVs fitted with diesel particulate filters.
The first signs that you may have DPF problems are that you start to see warning lights appearing on your dashboard, which indicate that the DPF filter may be getting carbon buildup or becoming blocked.
Usually, when carbon builds up inside the DPF filter or it starts to get blocked, an automatic DPF cleaning process is initiated by the vehicle’s ECU (engine management system) to burn off this build-up. This is intended to stop you from getting DPF problems.
This process is called DPF regeneration which we cover elsewhere on this site, and you can find out more by clicking here.

If you see a warning light on the dashboard to indicate potential DPF problems, the first step is to initiate a DPF regeneration to attempt to clear the carbon build-up or blockage. This usually involves a decent run in the vehicle at around 50 mph+ for at least 5 – 10 mins.
Detailed instructions on what and how to do this should be in your vehicle handbook, or you can consult a main dealer for further information.
If regeneration is not enough to clear your DPF problems, specialist cleaning processes may have to be carried out.
